The HERTEL 87144549 is a single-end roughing end mill engineered for aggressive material removal in metalworking and machining operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating that improves wear resistance and reduces heat buildup at the cutting edge. The mill measures 1.25 inches in diameter with a matching 1.25-inch shank, a 3-inch length of cut, and a 5.5-inch overall length. Six fine-pitch flutes and a right-hand cutting direction deliver efficient chip evacuation during roughing passes. Center-cutting geometry allows plunge entry as well as conventional profiling. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and CNC operators working in job shops or production environments are the primary users of this tool.
This end mill is suited for roughing operations on ferrous metals, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys where a standard HSS tool would wear prematurely. The M42 cobalt substrate and TiCN coating work together to maintain edge integrity at elevated cutting speeds. Regular-length geometry keeps the tool rigid enough for slotting, peripheral milling, and step-milling without excessive deflection. It is a single-end tool, so it is retired once the cutting end is worn rather than flipped.
Designed for use in standard straight-bore end mill holders, collet chucks, and hydraulic toolholders accepting a 1.25-inch shank diameter. Verify holder bore size and drawbar torque specifications before mounting.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Always power down and lock out the spindle before inserting or removing the tool. Secure the shank to the full recommended engagement depth in the toolholder to prevent pullout under load. Do not use this tool for finishing cuts where tight dimensional tolerances are required; swap to a dedicated finishing end mill after roughing is complete.
