The HERTEL 87068 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting 2-1/4-12 UNS internal threads in a wide range of materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap delivers consistent thread quality in manual tapping operations. It features a plug chamfer, which provides a gradual thread lead-in suited for through-holes and most general-purpose applications. With 6 flutes and an H6 thread limit, it maintains tight tolerances for precision threading work. Overall length is 5.25 inches, with a 2.0-inch thread length and a shank diameter of 1.894 inches. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance professionals are the primary users of this tool.
This tap is used in manual hand tapping operations where a large-diameter UNS thread form is required. The plug chamfer style makes it well-suited for through-hole applications, though it can be used in blind holes when adequate depth is available. The bright finish means no coating interference, which is appropriate for use with cutting fluids or tapping compounds in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It is commonly found in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and fabrication environments where large-diameter thread repair or creation is performed on a benchtop or in a vise.
Designed for use in standard hand tap holders and T-handle tap wrenches sized for large-diameter taps. Intended for manual threading of 2-1/4-12 UNS threads in through-hole and deep blind-hole applications where plug chamfer geometry is appropriate.
This tap is installed by a machinist or toolmaker using a properly sized T-handle or adjustable tap wrench. Secure the workpiece firmly before beginning the tapping operation, and apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound to reduce tool wear and improve thread quality. Advance the tap with steady, even pressure and back off periodically to break chips. Never force a tap against resistance, as high speed steel is brittle and will snap under excessive lateral load.
