The HERTEL 84580745 is a high speed steel jobber-length drill bit in No. 1 wire size (0.2280 inches decimal), designed for general-purpose holemaking in metal, wood, and similar materials. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and cutting pressure compared to a conventional 118-degree point, making it well suited for harder stock and production environments. An oxide finish provides moderate corrosion resistance and reduces friction during cutting. The two-flute, right-hand spiral design evacuates chips efficiently, and the web-thinned, tapered web construction minimizes thrust requirements. This bit is sized and constructed for daily shop or field use by machinists, pipefitters, electricians, and general trade mechanics.
This jobber drill bit is used in hand-held portable drills and drill presses for holemaking tasks in light manufacturing, maintenance, and mechanical contracting applications. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks without adapters. The overall length of 3.875 inches and flute length of 2.625 inches are consistent with jobber-series proportions, giving a balance of reach and rigidity suited to through-hole drilling in typical structural and sheet material thicknesses. No coolant-through capability is present, so external cutting fluid or periodic bit withdrawal for cooling is recommended in sustained cutting cycles.
Designed as a jobber-series replacement or stock drill bit for use in any standard three-jaw drill chuck accepting a 0.2280 inch straight cylindrical shank, consistent with NAS specification requirements for heavy-duty jobber drills.
Installed by machinists, pipefitters, electricians, and mechanical trade technicians using a standard drill press or portable drill. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling to avoid premature wear or bit breakage. Apply cutting fluid when drilling steel or other ferrous materials to extend bit life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace any bit showing chipping, heat discoloration beyond the oxide finish, or visible heel dragging.
