The HERTEL 83240705 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metalworking applications where standard HSS tooling falls short. The bit features a 1-7/32 inch (1.2188 inch decimal) cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to run in standard half-inch chucks despite its large cutting diameter. A 135-degree notched point angle reduces thrust and self-centers on entry without a center punch. The titanium nitride (TiN) coating extends surface hardness and tool life in abrasive materials. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3 inch flute length. Right-hand cut with a regular spiral flute geometry. Intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with tough alloy and stainless materials.
This bit is rated for primary use in hardened stainless steel, heat treated alloy, and high temperature alloy workpieces. The reduced shank design makes it practical on drill presses, magnetic base drills, and CNC setups limited to 1/2 inch tooling capacity. General purpose cobalt construction handles intermittent and production drilling in job shop, maintenance, and fabrication environments. No through-coolant provision; cutting fluid applied externally is recommended when drilling hard alloys to manage heat buildup and extend tool life.

Install and remove this bit with the machine fully powered down and the spindle at a complete stop. Secure the 1/2 inch shank firmly in a properly rated chuck before operation. When drilling hardened or high-temperature alloys, apply an appropriate cutting fluid externally to manage heat — dry drilling in these materials accelerates wear and risks work hardening at the entry point. Inspect the cutting edges before each use; cobalt bits should be resharpened or replaced rather than run dull, as dull tooling increases thrust and heat significantly.
