The HERTEL 83240655 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling hard metals that standard high-speed steel bits cannot handle reliably. It carries a 1-3/32 inch cutting diameter paired with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, making it compatible with standard 1/2 inch drill chucks without requiring a larger spindle. The 135-degree notched split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating over the cobalt substrate adds surface hardness and heat resistance, extending tool life in demanding applications. The overall length is 6 inches with a 3 inch flute length, keeping the bit rigid during deep-hole passes.
This bit is suited for right-hand drilling in hardened stainless steel, heat treated alloy steel, and high-temperature alloys. These materials are common in industrial maintenance, mechanical contracting, and fabrication work where hole quality and bit longevity in tough substrates matter. The reduced shank design allows machinists and tradespeople to run a larger diameter bit in a standard 1/2 inch chuck, eliminating the need for a larger drill press or hand drill. General-purpose spiral flute geometry supports chip evacuation across a range of feed rates and speeds appropriate to cobalt tooling.
Designed for use in hardened stainless steel, heat treated alloy, and high-temperature alloy workpieces. The 1/2 inch reduced shank fits any drill press, magnetic drill, or hand drill with a standard 1/2 inch chuck capacity.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck before applying power. Cobalt bits perform best at lower RPM with steady feed pressure appropriate to the workpiece hardness - consult a speeds-and-feeds reference for the specific alloy being drilled. No coolant is required per product specification, though a cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material is generally recommended practice in metalworking to manage heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and discard or resharpen if chipping or dulling is observed.
