The HERTEL 83238832 is a screw machine length drill bit sized to Letter O (0.3160 inches decimal equivalent), designed for high-production drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and maintenance applications. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it features a 135-degree split point and web-thinned geometry that reduces thrust on entry and improves centering without a pilot hole. The shorter screw machine length body increases rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and automatic screw machines where chatter and deflection need to be minimized.
This drill bit is intended for use in metal cutting applications including steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials in both job shop and production environments. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. The regular spiral flute promotes efficient chip evacuation during through-hole and blind-hole drilling. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the typical end users for this style of bit. It conforms to NAS 907 specification under the NAS designation, which is common in aerospace and precision machining supply chains.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for screw machine length drill bits in the 0.3000 to 0.3500 inch size range, compatible with any drill press, CNC machining center, or hand-held drill with a standard chuck accepting a 0.3160-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with cutting tool safety. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before starting the cut. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve finish quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and do not run a chipped or dull bit at full feed rate, as this increases the risk of breakage and workpiece damage.
