The HERTEL 77428605 is a reduced shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in low and medium tensile strength materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it delivers durability and heat resistance in demanding shop and field conditions. The bit measures 35/64 inch in diameter (0.5469 inch decimal) with a 1/2 inch Weldon flat shank for secure, slip-resistant chuck engagement. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3 inch flute length and a standard 118-degree point angle. The Weldon shank features 3 flats, making it well suited for end mill holders and Weldon-style chucks. Right-hand spiral fluting evacuates chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole applications.
This drill bit is intended for metalworking applications involving low and medium tensile strength materials such as mild steel, aluminum, and similar metals. The reduced shank design allows a 35/64 inch cutting diameter to be used in a standard 1/2 inch chuck without requiring a larger spindle. It is commonly used in machine shop environments, manufacturing lines, and maintenance settings where consistent, repeatable hole sizing is required. The 3 inch maximum drilling depth supports typical through-hole and moderate-depth blind-hole work on plate and structural stock.
Designed for use with 1/2 inch Weldon-style end mill holders and chucks; suitable for drilling low and medium tensile strength materials including mild steel and aluminum.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool operator. Secure the Weldon shank firmly in a compatible holder, aligning at least one flat with the set screw to prevent axial pull-out during operation. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing or adjusting the bit. This bit does not support coolant-through operation; use appropriate external cutting fluid when drilling ferrous materials to extend tool life.
