The HERTEL 74148941 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for precision hole-making in hard and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from solid carbide grade C2, it delivers the rigidity and edge retention needed when drilling cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel, titanium alloys, and tool steel. The cutting geometry features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust force on entry. A slow-spiral flute configuration helps control chip evacuation in tough, stringy, or abrasive materials. The bright uncoated finish keeps the carbide substrate exposed, making it well-suited for applications where coating adhesion or contamination is a concern. Machinists, tool and die makers, and production drillers in aerospace, medical, and industrial fabrication environments are the primary users of this tool.
This drill bit is sized at 9/32 inch (0.2812 inches) in diameter and runs at a 2-11/16 inch overall length with a 1-1/2 inch flute length. The short screw machine length body provides extra rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in CNC machining centers, manual mills, and drill presses where tight tolerance holes are required. It is suited for production runs in shops working stainless steel fastener bores, aerospace component drilling, and precision fixture work where hole diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide screw machine drill for use in CNC machining centers, manual drill presses, and milling machines accepting a straight cylindrical shank in the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch drill size range.
This tool is installed and changed by machinists following standard toolroom practice. Secure the straight shank in a collet, drill chuck, or hydraulic toolholder to the holding equipment manufacturer's specified clamping procedure before beginning any cut. Disengage spindle power and confirm the spindle has come to a full stop before measuring, inspecting, or changing the bit. Solid carbide is brittle - avoid side loads, interrupted cuts without correct feeds and speeds, and contact with hard fixturing surfaces that could chip the cutting edge.
