The HERTEL 74147687 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into tough, high tensile strength materials where standard high-speed steel bits fall short. It features a 29/32 inch (0.9062 inch) cutting diameter with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to chuck into standard 1/2 inch drill chucks despite its larger cutting diameter. The 118-degree standard point angle provides an aggressive, self-centering entry suited to ferrous metals and hard alloys. An oxide straw finish adds a layer of surface protection and helps reduce friction during cutting. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently throughout the 3 inch flute length.
This bit is suited for metalworking and fabrication environments where machinists, millwrights, and maintenance mechanics need to bore larger-diameter holes without stepping up to a larger chuck capacity. Typical applications include drilling structural steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and other tough high tensile strength workpieces. The reduced shank design makes it a practical choice when the available drilling equipment has a 1/2 inch chuck capacity but the job requires a hole diameter approaching one inch. No coolant system is required, though flood or mist cooling can extend tool life in production settings.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit drill bit for use in any 1/2 inch capacity drill chuck, whether mounted in a drill press, magnetic drill, or hand-held power drill rated for this cutting diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance mechanics familiar with metalworking drill operations. Ensure the drill press or power tool is fully de-energized and the chuck is secured before inserting or removing the bit. Confirm the reduced shank is fully seated and tightened in the chuck before beginning any cut. Follow applicable shop safety standards and wear appropriate PPE, including eye protection, when drilling metal.
