The HERTEL 74147430 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into tough, high-tensile-strength materials where standard high-speed steel bits fail or wear prematurely. The bit measures 17/32 inches (0.5312 inches decimal) in cutting diameter with a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2-inch chucks. The 118-degree standard point angle provides a versatile entry geometry suited to a wide range of ferrous and hard alloy workpieces. An oxide straw finish is applied to the flute surfaces to reduce friction and extend service life in demanding applications.
This bit is intended for use in metalworking, mechanical, and industrial maintenance applications where hard or high-tensile alloys are encountered. Typical use cases include drilling through alloy steel, tool steel, stainless steel, and similarly tough ferrous materials. It is sized for right-hand rotation and is well suited to drill press and hand-held drill work where a reduced shank allows a larger cutting diameter than the chuck capacity would otherwise permit. Machinists, millwrights, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard addition for any drill press, magnetic drill, or hand drill equipped with a 1/2-inch chuck, targeting applications in tough high-tensile-strength ferrous and alloy materials.
Install and remove this bit only with the drill fully powered down and the chuck key removed from the chuck. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a 1/2-inch or larger chuck to the full depth of the shank flat before drilling. Cobalt bits perform best at lower RPM with consistent feed pressure - avoid intermittent or chattering contact, which accelerates point wear. No coolant is required per the product specification, but chip clearing and consistent feed control are critical when working hard alloys.
