The HERTEL 74147117 is a taper length drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications in professional machine shop and fabrication environments. Built from cobalt tool steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, this bit handles high-heat cutting conditions that would prematurely wear standard high-speed steel tooling. It is sized to wire gauge 30, equivalent to 0.1285 inches in decimal. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and minimizes the need for a center punch. A regular spiral flute with a tapered web configuration evacuates chips efficiently through the 3-inch flute length. Total overall length is 5.375 inches on a straight cylindrical shank.
This drill bit is suited for production drilling, maintenance repair, and toolroom work where harder work materials are common. The cobalt construction and TiAlN coating make it a practical choice when drilling alloy steel, stainless steel, and other tough ferrous materials that generate significant cutting heat. The right-hand cut, straight shank design is compatible with standard drill presses, milling machines, and CNC machining centers that accept straight-shank tooling. Web thinning reduces thrust requirements, which is an advantage on lighter-duty spindles or when drilling deeper holes without coolant.
Rated for use in alloy steel and stainless steel applications. Fits any drill press, milling machine, or machining center chuck or collet system accepting a straight cylindrical shank at the 0.1285-inch diameter.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with proper speeds and feeds for cobalt tooling in ferrous materials. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before initiating a cut, and verify that workpieces are clamped or fixtured to prevent movement. This bit is specified without coolant-through capability, so external coolant or cutting fluid is recommended when drilling stainless steel or alloy steel to manage heat at the cutting zone. Inspect the cutting edge for wear before each use and replace when edge condition degrades to avoid workpiece damage or tool breakage.
