The HERTEL 74146598 is a taper length drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications. Built from HSS-CO 8% cobalt alloy (M42 grade), it delivers the heat and wear resistance needed when working through alloy steel and stainless steel. The bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers the thrust required to start a hole without a center punch. A TiAlN coating further extends tool life by reducing friction and resisting heat buildup at high surface speeds. At 5/16 inch in diameter, it fits standard drill chucks and is a practical choice for HVAC fabricators, pipefitters, maintenance technicians, and industrial tradespeople who drill hard metals regularly.
This bit is suited for production and field drilling into alloy steel and stainless steel. The taper length format provides extra reach beyond a standard jobber bit, making it useful in tight or recessed drilling situations. The 4-inch flute length supports chip evacuation over deeper cuts, while the straight cylindrical shank seats cleanly in three-jaw chucks on both benchtop drill presses and handheld drills. The right-hand spiral flute and web-thinned, tapered web configuration are optimized for consistent performance in ferrous metals.
Rated for drilling alloy steel and stainless steel. Compatible with any drill press or handheld drill accepting a 5/16-inch straight shank. No additional compatible model numbers were specified in the product data.
Installation of this bit should be performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, or tradespeople familiar with metal drilling operations. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify it is centered and tight before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless or alloy steel to extend bit life and manage heat, even though this bit does not have internal coolant-through capability. Always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure the workpiece is clamped securely before drilling.
