The HERTEL 74146473 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metal removal applications where standard-length bits fall short. Built from cobalt tool steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, it handles elevated cutting temperatures and abrasive workpiece materials without premature edge breakdown. The 135-degree split point reduces thrust and enables self-centering starts on flat and curved surfaces, eliminating the need for a center punch in most setups. At 5.125 inches overall length with a 2.75-inch spiral flute, it provides additional reach compared to jobber-length equivalents while maintaining rigidity. A web-thinned, tapered web construction further reduces cutting resistance. Licensed tradespeople and machining professionals working in production or maintenance environments will find this bit suited to their precision drilling needs.
This drill bit is optimized for cutting alloy steel and stainless steel, materials that generate significant heat and wear on standard high-speed steel tooling. It fits standard 1/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank chucks and is suited for use in drill presses, CNC drilling operations, and heavy-duty hand drills. The taper length profile is a common specification for production metalworking, tool-and-die, and MRO environments where deeper hole penetration or greater clearance above the workpiece is required. Right-hand cut orientation is standard for conventional machine spindle rotation.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or supplemental tooling for any drill press, hand drill, or CNC spindle accepting a 1/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for use in alloy steel and stainless steel applications.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by machinists or qualified tradespeople familiar with metal drilling operations and proper chuck-tightening procedures. Ensure the drill chuck is fully secured and the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before beginning any cut. Always set appropriate spindle speed for the workpiece material and bit diameter - excessive speed on cobalt tooling in stainless steel will cause premature tip failure. Use cutting fluid where applicable to further reduce heat and extend tool life.
