The HERTEL 74131954 is a screw machine length drill bit sized to Letter V (0.3770 inches decimal equivalent), designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, this bit handles elevated cutting temperatures and abrasive workpieces that standard HSS tooling cannot sustain. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and thrust force at entry, allowing cleaner starts without center-punching on most surfaces. At 3.25 inches overall length, the screw machine format provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it a preferred choice in production drilling and CNC applications where chatter and deflection are concerns.
This drill bit is suited for metalworking applications in machine shops, tool rooms, and production environments. It is commonly run in screw machines, drill presses, milling machines, and CNC machining centers where short, rigid tooling is required. The right-hand spiral flute with regular helix evacuates chips efficiently in steel, stainless, cast iron, and high-nickel alloys. The TiAlN coating extends tool life in dry or minimal-lubrication cutting conditions, making this bit appropriate for high-speed production runs where coolant delivery is limited.
Designed for use in screw machines, drill presses, CNC machining centers, and milling machines accepting straight-cylindrical shank tooling in the 0.3500 to 0.4000 inch decimal inch size range.
Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine fully powered down and at a complete stop. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized chuck or collet to the manufacturer-specified clamping range before operation. Machinists should follow applicable ANSI and OSHA machine guarding standards when operating drilling equipment. Inspect the cutting edges and coating for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged point should be reground or the bit replaced to maintain hole quality and prevent tool breakage.
