The HERTEL 74131590 is a screw machine length drill bit ground from cobalt steel and finished with a TiAlN coating for extended tool life in demanding drilling applications. At 13/32 inch (0.4062 inch decimal) in diameter, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements compared to a conventional 118-degree point. The web-thinned, parallel-web construction paired with a regular spiral flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation. Overall length is 3-5/16 inches with a 1-15/16 inch flute length, and the straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks or collet holders. Weight is 0.54 pounds.
Screw machine length drill bits are shorter and more rigid than jobber-length bits, making them well suited for CNC machining centers, turret lathes, screw machines, and benchtop drill presses where reduced overhang improves hole accuracy and finish. The cobalt substrate handles elevated cutting temperatures generated when drilling stainless steel, hardened alloy steels, cast iron, titanium, and other difficult-to-machine materials. The TiAlN coating adds surface hardness and oxidation resistance, extending run time between resharpening cycles. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional clockwise-rotation spindles.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.4000 to 0.4500 inch decimal size range, compatible with CNC machining centers, turret lathes, screw machines, and benchtop drill presses using right-hand rotation spindles.
Installation and operation should be performed by machinists or qualified trades personnel familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the bit from a chuck or collet. Confirm the shank is fully seated and the chuck or collet nut is torqued per the toolholder manufacturer's specification before initiating a cut. Appropriate eye protection, machine guarding, and chip management practices should be observed in accordance with applicable shop safety standards.
