The HERTEL 74131202 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, high-heat drilling applications in metal and hard materials. Built from cobalt high-speed steel, it retains hardness at elevated temperatures where standard HSS bits would soften and fail. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking at entry and lowers thrust force needed to start the cut, making it well suited for production drilling in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and other ferrous alloys. At 2-11/16 inches overall length with a 1-1/2 inch flute length, the stubby screw machine profile provides rigidity and minimizes deflection in close-clearance setups. The straight shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters.
This bit is used primarily in production machining, job shop, and maintenance environments where drilling ferrous metals, alloy steels, and work-hardening stainless is routine. Its web-thinned parallel web reduces chisel edge contact and improves chip evacuation in blind holes. Machinists, tool-and-die techs, and maintenance mechanics reach for screw machine length bits when drilling in drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held industrial drills where stub-length rigidity matters more than reach. The 0.2720 inch decimal diameter corresponds to Letter I sizing.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine length drill bit for Letter I diameter applications in standard drill chucks accepting a straight cylindrical shank.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance mechanics familiar with rotating cutting tool safety. Ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened and the workpiece is securely clamped before operation. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use and replace the bit if damage is found. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the material being drilled to extend tool life and improve hole quality.
