The HERTEL 74131152 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit sized to Letter C (0.2420 inches decimal equivalent) with a 135-degree split point and web-thinned geometry. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber length, providing added rigidity and reduced deflection in production drilling and tight-clearance applications. The split point starts on contact without a center punch and cuts aggressively through ferrous and hard alloy materials. With a straw finish and 2-flute regular spiral flute design, this bit is suited for HVAC technicians, pipefitters, plumbers, and machinists drilling through steel, cast iron, and stainless steel in the field or at a bench.
This bit is commonly used in trade applications requiring precise, repeatable hole sizing in metal - including sheet metal fabrication, mechanical room pipe hangers, structural steel brackets, and electrical enclosure work. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks. The cobalt steel construction handles heat buildup better than standard HSS bits, making it a practical choice for harder materials and higher feed rates where conventional high-speed steel dulls prematurely.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use bit for standard straight-shank drill chucks in drill presses, hand drills, and CNC machines accepting straight cylindrical shanks in the 0.2420-inch size range.
Install and remove drill bits only with the drill or press fully powered off and the chuck key removed from the chuck. Secure the workpiece with a clamp or vise before drilling - never hold metal freehand against a rotating bit. Use a cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel or hard alloys to extend bit life and maintain point geometry. Inspect the split point for chipping or rounding before each use; a damaged point increases thrust requirements and reduces hole accuracy.
