The HERTEL 74130980 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, close-tolerance drilling in demanding production environments. Built from cobalt high-speed steel (HSCO), it delivers superior heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting pressure, enabling fast entry without a center punch. At 1.75 inches overall length with a 0.75-inch flute length, this stub-length geometry provides added rigidity for drilling gummy, abrasive, or hard materials. Licensed electricians, machinists, HVAC technicians, and plumbers use screw machine bits where short stiff drills outperform jobber-length tooling.
The 74130980 is suited for drilling wire gauge size 46 holes - 0.0810 inches in diameter - in metal fabrication, sheet metal work, and general mechanical assembly. Its stub length makes it a practical choice in drill presses, CNC machines, and hand drills where clearance is limited. The regular spiral flute and parallel web configuration support consistent chip evacuation across a range of base materials including stainless steel, alloy steel, and cast iron where cobalt tooling is preferred over standard HSS.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or production-grade screw machine drill bit for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held drills accepting a straight cylindrical shank in the applicable shank diameter range.
Installation and use of small-diameter drill bits should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with proper feed rates and spindle speeds for cobalt tooling. Ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened and the workpiece is securely clamped before beginning any drilling operation. Do not run cobalt bits without appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling hard metals, as dry cutting accelerates tip wear. Inspect the cutting edges before each use - small-diameter bits are susceptible to breakage if run at excessive feed pressure.
