The HERTEL 74130568 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in tough materials including alloy steels, stainless steel, and hardened stock. Built to wire gauge Size 5 (0.2055 inches decimal), it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting pressure at entry, making it well suited for both hand-fed and CNC drilling operations. The overall length of 2.375 inches and stub-length flute keep rigidity high and deflection low in short-reach setups. The two-flute regular spiral geometry provides efficient chip evacuation, while the web-thinned, parallel web construction lowers thrust requirements without sacrificing edge stability. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals are the typical users of this style bit.
This bit is intended for use in ferrous and non-ferrous machining environments where a standard jobber-length bit would introduce too much runout or flex. Screw machine length geometry makes it appropriate for turret lathes, screw machines, machining centers, and drill presses where short, rigid tooling is required. The cobalt construction handles elevated cutting temperatures better than standard HSS, extending tool life when drilling harder workpiece materials without flood coolant. The straight cylindrical shank seats directly into standard drill chucks and collet holders. No coolant-through capability is present in this bit.
Designed as an OEM-style cutting tool replacement for screw machine and short-stub drill bit applications requiring a Size 5 wire gauge diameter in cobalt construction. Part of the HSCO135 series.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with proper speeds and feeds for cobalt tooling. Secure the straight shank fully in the drill chuck or collet before operation, and verify runout before cutting. Avoid side-loading the bit during use, as screw machine length bits are optimized for axial thrust, not lateral force. Follow applicable machine guarding and PPE requirements per shop safety standards.
