The HERTEL 72846546 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for high-material-removal-rate milling operations in demanding shop environments. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and coated with Titanium Nitride (TiN), it delivers extended tool life and improved wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The 3/4 inch diameter cutter features 4 right-hand flutes with a fine pitch geometry, producing a chip-breaking action that reduces cutting forces and heat buildup during aggressive passes. Centercutting capability allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom professionals on manual and CNC milling equipment.
This roughing end mill is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous metals in both job shop and production environments. The fine-pitch flute design is particularly effective on materials that generate long, stringy chips, breaking them into manageable segments and reducing the risk of re-cutting. With a 1-5/8 inch length of cut and a 3-7/8 inch overall length on a 3/4 inch straight shank, it fits standard ER and side-lock toolholders used in vertical mills, machining centers, and knee mills. Typical applications include slotting, peripheral roughing, and pocketing operations where cycle time reduction is the priority.
Designed as a standard 3/4 inch straight-shank roughing end mill compatible with ER collet chucks, side-lock holders, and other 3/4 inch bore milling toolholders used on vertical machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Before mounting, verify the toolholder bore and collet are clean and free of chips or burrs that could affect runout. Secure the shank to the full recommended engagement depth of the toolholder and confirm tool projection does not exceed what is needed for the cut, as excessive overhang reduces rigidity and accelerates wear. Always confirm spindle direction is set to right-hand rotation before engaging the cut.
