The HERTEL 67230284 is a cobalt stub-length drill bit designed for drilling into high-tensile-strength metals. It carries a No. 13 wire size designation, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.185 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements, making it well suited for hard or work-hardening alloys. The oxide coating adds surface hardness and provides mild lubricity during cutting. At 0.5625 inches overall length, this is a stub-format bit built for tight clearance applications where a jobber-length bit would not fit. Licensed trades and industrial maintenance personnel are the primary installers of this tool.
This bit is intended for use in high-tensile-strength metals including alloy steels, stainless steels, and similar hard materials where standard high-speed steel bits lose their edge quickly. The stub OAL and 0.3125-inch flute length make it appropriate for close-quarters drilling on assemblies, fixtures, and structural components. The 1/4-28 threaded shank is compatible with quick-change collet systems and threaded-shank adapters used in production and maintenance drilling operations. Right-hand cutting direction with a regular spiral flute ensures efficient chip evacuation in typical through-hole applications. Meets NAS 965 Type D specification.
Designed for use with quick-change collet systems and threaded-shank drill adapters accepting a 1/4-28 thread. Rated for general-purpose drilling in high-tensile-strength metals per NAS 965 Type D.
This tool is typically installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, or industrial tradespeople using a drill press, hand drill, or pneumatic drill with a compatible 1/4-28 threaded-shank holder. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the spindle speed is appropriate for the material and bit diameter before beginning the cut. Cutting fluid or lubricant is recommended when drilling stainless or alloy steels to extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is evident.
