The HERTEL 61699690 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed steel drilling in general-purpose machining applications. It is sized to wire gauge No. 49, corresponding to a decimal diameter of 0.0730 inches, and features a 118-degree standard point angle for clean entry and accurate starting without a center punch. The overall length of 1-11/16 inches and shortened flute length of 11/16 inches are characteristic of screw machine stub geometry, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in production drilling environments. The high-speed steel construction with oxide coating provides basic heat resistance and lubricity for moderate cutting speeds.
This bit is suited for production machining, tool-and-die work, and bench drilling operations where small-diameter, close-tolerance holes are required. The stub length format is commonly used in screw machine setups, drill presses, and CNC turret applications where minimal overhang is needed to maintain hole position accuracy. The right-hand spiral flute design clears chips efficiently in through-hole and shallow blind-hole drilling. General-purpose grade construction makes it appropriate for carbon steel, aluminum, plastics, and similar workpiece materials encountered in light manufacturing and maintenance settings.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard three-jaw drill chucks, collet systems, and turret toolholders accepting straight-cylindrical shanks in the applicable size range.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with small-diameter drilling operations. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation to prevent runout and bit breakage at this diameter. At 0.0730 inches, feed rate and spindle speed must be appropriate for the workpiece material to avoid snapping the bit. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use, as small HSS bits are susceptible to dulling and fracture if run at incorrect parameters.
