The HERTEL 48538151 is a short-series threaded shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in low-tensile strength materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with an oxide coating, it carries a No. 11 wire gauge size, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1910 inches. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and lowers the thrust required to start the cut, making it well suited for hand-held or fixture-mounted drilling operations. Overall length is 1.25 inches with a 9/16-inch (0.5625-inch) flute length. The 1/4-28 threaded hex shank secures positively in compatible threaded-shank chucks and holders commonly used in aerospace and production drilling fixtures.
This bit is intended for drilling in low-tensile strength materials including aluminum alloys, plastics, and similar substrates commonly encountered in light manufacturing, aerospace assembly, and maintenance repair operations. The short overall length provides rigidity in applications where stub-length drills are preferred to minimize deflection. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration further reduces cutting force and helps control chip formation in through-hole and blind-hole applications. It is suitable for use by machinists, aerospace technicians, and maintenance technicians working with threaded-shank drill systems.
Designed for use with threaded-shank drill chucks and holders accepting a 1/4-28 threaded hex shank, per NAS 965 Type B specification. Intended for drilling low-tensile strength materials in general-purpose production and maintenance applications.
Installation is performed by threading the 1/4-28 shank securely into a compatible threaded-shank holder or chuck — ensure the shank is fully seated and torqued per the tool holder manufacturer's recommendation before use. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and hole diameter before starting the cut. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use, and replace the bit if the split point or flute geometry is visibly damaged. Secure the workpiece in a fixture or vise to prevent movement during drilling.
