The HERTEL 44839124 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Constructed from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this tool handles tough ferrous metals and heat-resistant alloys where standard HSS tooling falls short. The 1/2 inch diameter cutter features 4 flutes with a coarse pitch geometry that breaks chips into smaller segments, reducing heat buildup and cutting forces. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating adds surface hardness and lubricity, extending tool life in production environments. The 1 inch length of cut and 3 inch overall length suit it for typical side-milling and slotting passes on vertical or horizontal machining centers.
This roughing end mill is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and production machining cells running steel, stainless, and similar materials. The coarse-pitch flute design excels in hogging operations where feed rates and depth of cut are prioritized over surface finish. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute direction make it compatible with standard spindle setups. Because this tool is not center-cutting, it is not intended for direct plunge entry. It is typically used in setups where ramping, helical interpolation, or a pre-drilled entry point is used before lateral engagement.
Designed for use in standard 1/2 inch collet chucks, end mill holders, and milling arbors on vertical machining centers, horizontal mills, and manual knee mills. Not center-cutting — not suitable for direct plunge entry without a pre-machined starting point.
Installation and operation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with milling tooling and speeds-and-feeds selection. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and locked before loading or removing the tool from the holder. Verify runout with a dial indicator after seating the shank to minimize vibration and premature edge wear. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when setting cutting parameters for cobalt tooling.
