The HERTEL 44838902 is a single-end cobalt roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tool delivers increased hardness and heat resistance compared to standard HSS end mills. It features a 3/8 inch diameter, four flutes in a coarse pitch configuration, and a 1.625 inch length of cut, making it well suited for hogging operations where rapid stock removal is the priority. The right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction are standard for conventional CNC and manual milling setups. This end mill is installed and used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in production and job shop environments.
This roughing end mill is appropriate for use on ferrous and non-ferrous materials where coarse pitch geometry is selected to break chips efficiently and reduce cutting forces. The TiCN coating improves wear resistance and extends tool life in abrasive or high-temperature cutting conditions. With a 3/8 inch shank diameter matching the mill diameter, it fits directly into standard collets and end mill holders without a reducer. It is a centercutting design, allowing plunge entry into workpieces. Typical applications include roughing passes on steel, cast iron, and alloy materials before a finishing pass with a standard end mill.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement end mill for standard 3/8 inch collets and end mill holders used in CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. The machine spindle must be confirmed to be at a full stop and the control placed in an e-stop or lockout condition before inserting or removing end mills. Ensure the collet or end mill holder is clean and free of chips before seating the shank to the correct engagement depth. Verify runout with a dial indicator after installation to confirm proper seating before beginning a cut.
