The HERTEL 44838654 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for high-efficiency material removal in metalworking and machining applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, this tool offers elevated heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS end mills. The 1/2 inch diameter, four-flute configuration with a fine-pitch design removes chips aggressively while maintaining edge integrity under sustained cutting loads. With a 1.625 inch length of cut and a 3.625 inch overall length, it fits standard machining center and manual mill setups. Right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction are standard. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and tool-and-die professionals on CNC and manual milling equipment.
This roughing end mill is suited for roughing passes in ferrous metals including alloy steels, tool steels, and stainless steel where rapid stock removal is required before finishing operations. The M42 cobalt substrate handles elevated cutting temperatures generated in interrupted cuts and harder workpiece materials. The TiN coating reduces friction and extends tool life in production environments. This is a non-centercutting tool and cannot be used for plunge cutting. It accepts a standard 1/2 inch collet or end mill holder and requires no extended reach setup. Typical applications include roughing pockets, slots, and peripheral cuts in job shop and production machining operations.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for 1/2 inch single-end roughing end mills used in standard CNC and manual milling machine setups that accept 1/2 inch shank tooling.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines. Power down and lock out the milling machine spindle before inserting or removing the tool from the collet or holder. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the collet or set-screw holder is torqued according to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify spindle direction is set to right-hand rotation before engaging the cut.
