The HERTEL 42246 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for drilling into hard and demanding materials. Built from M35 cobalt steel with an oxide straw finish, this bit delivers the heat resistance and edge retention needed for tough applications. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at startup and lowers thrust requirements during entry. At 4.5 inches overall length with a 2.875-inch spiral flute, this is a stub-length format that improves rigidity and control in drill press and CNC operations. Sized at 41/64 inch (0.6406 inches) in diameter, it is suited for production drilling and precision trade work where standard high-speed steel bits fall short.
This drill bit is rated for use on hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy. The screw machine length format is commonly used in machine shop environments, manufacturing, and maintenance applications where a shorter, stiffer bit is preferred over jobber-length alternatives. The regular spiral flute geometry supports chip evacuation in both hand-held and machine-mounted setups. No coolant-through capability is present, so external cooling or cutting fluid should be applied when drilling heat-sensitive or gummy materials.
Designed as a direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks, drill presses, lathes, and CNC machining centers accepting a 41/64-inch diameter shank. Rated for drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with drill press and CNC setup procedures. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and confirm the chuck is fully tightened to the correct shank diameter. Apply cutting fluid or external coolant when working with stainless steel or titanium to manage heat buildup. No coolant-through capability is present on this bit, so internal cooling is not an option.
