The HERTEL 42209 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for cutting hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy. It measures 13/32 inch (0.4062 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 3.3125 inches and a flute length of 1.9375 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows drilling without a center punch in most applications. The oxide straw finish provides light corrosion resistance and reduces friction during cutting. This bit is suited for trade machinists, maintenance techs, and fabrication professionals working with tough metals in production and repair environments.
Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection during drilling. This makes the HERTEL 42209 well suited for drill press work, CNC setups, and hand drilling in tight spaces where a longer bit would flex or chatter. The M35 cobalt material grade retains hardness at elevated temperatures, making it a practical choice when drilling through stainless steel or titanium alloy where heat buildup is a concern. Typical users include HVAC fabricators, pipefitters, and metalworking tradespeople who regularly drill through hard or work-hardened stock.
Designed for drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy. Fits any drill press, CNC spindle, or hand drill chuck that accepts a 13/32 inch shank. Drill bit size falls within the 0.4000 to 0.4500 decimal inch range.
Secure the bit firmly in a properly sized chuck before use and verify the chuck key is removed before starting the spindle. Use cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel or titanium to extend bit life and manage heat buildup. A licensed machinist or experienced tradesperson should verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material before drilling. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point is damaged.
