The HERTEL 42202 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials including hardened metals, heat-treatable alloy steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys. Built from M35 cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide straw coating, it delivers greater heat and wear resistance than standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and thrust at entry, making it well suited for production drilling and precision work. At 3 inches overall length, this stub-length geometry provides increased rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in short-hole applications. Sold individually.
This bit is intended for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and handheld power tools where short, rigid tooling is required. It excels in metal fabrication shops, maintenance and repair operations, and industrial production environments. The cobalt M35 composition makes it a preferred choice when machinists are working with work-hardening alloys, stainless steel grades, or titanium components that quickly degrade standard HSS tooling. The 1.6875-inch flute length accommodates the shallow hole depths typical in screw machine and production-drilling applications.
Designed for drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys. Fits any standard 11/32-inch or adjustable drill chuck on CNC machines, drill presses, or portable power tools.
Install and remove drill bits only with the machine fully powered down and the chuck key removed from the work area. Secure the bit firmly in the chuck, verifying concentricity before beginning a cut to prevent premature wear or bit breakage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to maximize tool life when drilling stainless or titanium. Inspect the split point for chipping or dulling before each use, as a damaged point increases thrust requirements and reduces hole accuracy.
