The HERTEL 42175 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications. Built from M35 cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide straw coating, it runs a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows faster penetration without a center punch. At 5/64 inch (0.0781 inch decimal) diameter with a 1-11/16 inch overall length, this short-flute geometry provides extra rigidity in tight setups, chucks, and drill presses where chatter control matters. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 12 units.
This bit is suited for drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys where standard high-speed steel bits lose edge quickly. The screw machine length format makes it a common choice in production environments, CNC drill presses, turret lathes, and manual drill press setups where a short, stiff bit reduces deflection and improves hole accuracy in hard stock. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians working on stainless or alloy components reach for cobalt bits like this one when job conditions exceed what standard HSS can handle.
Designed for use in standard 3-jaw drill chucks and collet systems accepting 5/64 inch diameter shanks. Intended for drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys in production and maintenance applications.
Secure the bit fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable limits before drilling into hard stock. When working on stainless or titanium, use appropriate cutting fluid and maintain consistent feed pressure to avoid work hardening the material ahead of the cutting edge. Inspect the split point for wear before each use, as cobalt bits used on hard materials can show tip wear that is not always visible to the naked eye without magnification. Dispose of worn bits per shop safety procedures and do not attempt to re-grind without proper drill grinding equipment.
