The HERTEL 42014 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for drilling through tough materials including hardened steels, stainless steel, and other high-strength alloys. The bit measures 27/64 inch (0.4219 inch decimal) in diameter with a 5-3/8 inch overall length and a 3-15/16 inch flute length. A 135-degree split point reduces walking on contact and allows drilling without a center punch on most surfaces. The oxide and gold coating adds surface hardness and provides basic lubricity during cutting. Right-hand cutting direction with a regular spiral flute pattern makes this a standard production choice for machinists, pipefitters, and sheet metal mechanics working in the field or at a bench.
This bit suits applications where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely, particularly in stainless steel pipe work, boiler plate, structural steel, and heavy gauge sheet metal. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks on portable drills, drill presses, and magnetic base drills. The 2-flute spiral geometry provides adequate chip clearance in both through-hole and blind-hole drilling. At 0.4219 inch diameter it falls within the 0.4000 to 0.5000 inch drill size range, making it a common selection for tapping undersized holes or clearance drilling for fasteners in that diameter band.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit compatible with any standard three-jaw drill chuck accepting straight cylindrical shanks in the 27/64 inch diameter class.
Install and remove drill bits only with the drill or drill press powered off and the chuck key fully removed before operation. Use cutting fluid or cutting oil when drilling stainless steel or hardened alloys to extend bit life and reduce heat buildup. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation or grab. Inspection and replacement of worn bits should follow standard shop safety practice to avoid breakage under load.
