The HERTEL 2SHVNGA331630BN is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision single-point turning operations on hardened ferrous materials and superalloys. Manufactured to grade HT630BN in an uncoated finish, this insert features a diamond (V) shape with a 35-degree included angle and a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. The 1/64-inch corner radius and 3/16-inch insert thickness deliver predictable geometry for finishing and semi-finishing passes. It uses a clamp and pin holding method with a clearance code N and tolerance code G, making it compatible with standard VNGA-style toolholders. Machinists and tool-room technicians specify this insert for high-speed hard turning where CBN outperforms carbide.
This insert is suited for hard turning applications on materials such as hardened steels, cast irons, and powder-metal components where conventional carbide inserts lose edge life. The 2SH-VNGA insert style and A chip breaker geometry make it appropriate for finishing passes requiring tight dimensional tolerances. It is commonly installed in CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with compatible negative-rake VNGA toolholders. The uncoated PCBN substrate provides direct thermal conductivity and consistent edge sharpness without the coating delamination risk associated with interrupted cuts on hard materials.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for VNGA-style negative-rake indexable turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick diamond insert with a 0.150-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder specifications before ordering.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not overtighten the clamp screw, as this can fracture the PCBN insert. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
