The HERTEL 2SHDNGA431620BN is a single-point turning insert manufactured from uncoated Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN), designed for high-speed finish turning of hardened ferrous materials and superalloys. It carries a 55-degree diamond shape (ANSI Insert Shape Code D), a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64 inch corner radius. The insert conforms to DNGA geometry with a 0-degree relief angle, tolerance code G, and chip breaker designation A. It is specified under manufacturer grade HT620BN and is intended for use by machinists and tooling specialists in CNC turning centers and manual lathes where tight tolerances and long tool life on hardened workpieces are required.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning applications on hardened steels, cast irons, and heat-resistant alloys where conventional carbide inserts reach their limits. The PCBN substrate enables cutting speeds significantly higher than carbide at elevated hardness levels, making it a practical choice for automotive, aerospace, and die-mold machining operations. The 55-degree diamond geometry provides a balance of edge strength and accessibility when turning external profiles and shoulders. It is held by clamp and pin holding methods, consistent with standard DNGA-style toolholders.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for DNGA-style turning toolholders accepting a 55-degree diamond insert with a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, 0.2030 inch hole diameter, and clamp-plus-pin holding method. Insert Size Code 431 applies.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is locked and all motion is stopped before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and verify the clamp and pin are properly engaged before resuming operation. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidelines for clamp screws and inspect the pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
