The HERTEL 2557494 is a straight-flute HSS chucking reamer designed to bring bored or drilled holes to a precise finished diameter. With a cutting diameter of 0.4990 inches and a 2-inch flute length, this reamer removes minimal stock while delivering tight dimensional tolerances and a clean bore surface finish. The 8-inch overall length and straight-cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and collet holders on lathes, drill presses, and machining centers. The bright, uncoated HSS construction is well suited to general-purpose reaming in a range of workpiece materials. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production and job-shop environments.
This reamer is used for finishing operations where hole diameter accuracy is critical, such as fitting dowel pins, close-tolerance bushings, or precision-fit shaft bores. The right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional machine reaming. The 6-flute configuration distributes cutting forces evenly around the bore, reducing chatter and improving surface finish in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Typical applications include general machining in light manufacturing, maintenance repair, and toolroom environments.
Designed as a standard chucking reamer for use in drill presses, lathes, and CNC machining centers equipped with drill chucks or collet holders accepting a straight-cylindrical shank of 0.4990-inch diameter class.
Chucking reamers are installed by machinists in a drill chuck or collet holder; ensure the shank is fully seated and the tool runs true before engaging the workpiece. Always apply a suitable cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve bore finish. Reaming removes a small amount of material and should follow a pre-drilled or bored hole that is already close to final diameter. Do not use a reamer to open up an undersized hole significantly, as this will overload the flutes and damage the cutting edges.
