The HERTEL 2387348 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-volume drilling in metal, light alloys, and similar materials. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it offers extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS bits. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements, making it well-suited for production drilling environments. At 2-3/16 inches overall length, this stub-length format provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, which is a key advantage when drilling in tight spaces or on CNC and manual drill presses where chatter is a concern.
This bit is used in machining, fabrication, and maintenance applications where a compact, rigid drill is needed. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. Right-hand spiral flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole operations. The TiN coating reduces friction and heat buildup at the cutting edge, extending the interval between resharpening. It is appropriate for use in production shops, tool rooms, and field maintenance by machinists, tool and die professionals, and experienced trades workers performing repetitive metal drilling tasks.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for Size 17 screw machine length drill bits used in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1730-inch straight cylindrical shank.
Install in a drill press, CNC machine, or hand drill with a chuck rated for the 0.1730-inch shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before beginning a production run. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. Inspect the cutting edge and TiN coating condition regularly; a dull or chipped bit should be resharpened or replaced to avoid overheating the workpiece.
