The HERTEL 2386670 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, close-tolerance drilling in metal, plastic, and composite materials. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide coating, this bit carries a wire gauge Size 60 diameter of 0.0400 inches and an overall length of 1.375 inches, making it well suited for confined-space and short-reach drilling applications. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows the bit to self-center without a pilot hole. A web-thinned, parallel-web construction keeps cutting forces low and improves chip evacuation through the spiral flutes. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors, as well as general metalworking shops, rely on bits of this type for precision tapping prep and small-bore through-holes.
This bit is used in production and maintenance environments where a compact drill profile is required. The screw machine length — shorter than a jobber-length bit — provides increased rigidity and reduced deflection in drill press, CNC, and turret-press applications. The straight cylindrical shank seats directly in standard collets, Jacobs chucks, and quick-change holders. Right-hand cutting direction makes it compatible with standard forward-rotating spindles. The 0.0400-inch decimal diameter is common for pre-drilling before No. 60 tap operations in light-gauge sheet metal and small enclosure panels.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or production consumable for standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills accepting straight cylindrical shanks in the 0.0000 to 0.1000 inch diameter range.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists, tool-and-die technicians, or licensed trade professionals familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the chuck is secured before inserting or removing the bit. Use the minimum recommended RPM for the material being drilled to avoid overheating the cutting edge. Do not apply lateral force to this small-diameter bit — feed pressure should be light and consistent to prevent breakage.
