The HERTEL 2386563 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-volume hole-making in metal, plastic, and similar materials where a stubby, rigid tool is required. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide coating for added lubricity and corrosion resistance, this bit measures 0.0730 inches in diameter (wire size 49) with a 135-degree split point that self-centers on entry and reduces thrust. At 1-11/16 inches overall length, the screw machine format offers greater rigidity than jobber-length bits, making it well-suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and automatic screw machines. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This bit is used in production machining and fabrication environments where small-diameter holes are drilled repeatedly in tight tolerances. The screw machine length minimizes deflection on close-tolerance work. Typical applications include tapping pilot holes, cross-drilling small fastener components, and general metalworking operations on ferrous and non-ferrous stock. The right-hand cutting direction and straight-cylindrical shank seat directly into standard drill chucks and collet holders without adapters.
Designed as a standard screw machine length drill bit for use in any drill press, CNC machining center, or hand drill equipped with a chuck or collet system capable of accepting a 0.0730-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Install the bit firmly into a properly sized drill chuck or collet before initiating any spindle movement. Ensure the machine is powered off and at a full stop before changing tooling. For best results with HSS tooling in metal applications, use a cutting fluid or lubricant appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve hole finish. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace any bit showing visible chipping or wear to maintain hole accuracy.
