The HERTEL 1-101-1000 is a 10-inch diameter, 3-jaw self-centering manual lathe chuck with a plain back mount, built for production and toolroom turning applications. Forged steel construction provides the rigidity and durability required for repetitive chucking under load. The self-centering scroll mechanism closes all three jaws simultaneously, reducing setup time when working with round or hex stock. Maximum spindle speed is 2,700 RPM, and the through-hole diameter measures 2.9921 inches, accommodating bar stock fed through the spindle. Jaw capacity ranges from 13/64 inches minimum to 10 inches maximum, making this chuck practical across a wide range of workpiece diameters.
This chuck is suited for manual engine lathes and toolroom lathes in both job shop and industrial maintenance environments. The plain back mount requires a backing plate matched to the specific lathe spindle, making it adaptable to a variety of machine spindle configurations. Licensed machinists and tool room operators typically select this chuck for general turning, facing, and boring work on cylindrical workpieces where rapid jaw centering is a priority. The 3.5-inch body length keeps the chuck compact relative to its 10-inch swing capacity.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or upgrade chuck for manual engine lathes equipped with plain back spindle noses; a matching backing plate must be specified separately to fit the target machine spindle.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician. The lathe must be powered down and the spindle fully stopped before removing or mounting any chuck. A correctly faced and bored backing plate is required to mate the plain back mount to the lathe spindle; improper backing plate fit can cause runout and unsafe chuck retention. Torque all mounting fasteners evenly and verify chuck runout with a dial indicator before returning the machine to service.
