The HERTEL 06822225 is a single-end roughing end mill engineered for aggressive material removal in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, this tool delivers extended wear resistance and improved cutting performance at elevated temperatures. The 4-flute, right-hand cutting geometry with a 0.5000-inch mill diameter and 0.5000-inch length of cut makes it well suited for hogging operations where maximizing stock removal per pass is the priority. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals specify cobalt roughers when pushing feed rates and encountering materials that wear down standard HSS tooling prematurely.
This roughing end mill is used in vertical machining centers, knee mills, and manual milling machines for roughing passes on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and similar materials. The regular-length, single-end configuration fits standard toolholding systems without extended-reach considerations. With an overall length of 2.5000 inches and a 0.5000-inch shank diameter, it mounts directly into collet chucks, end mill holders, or set-screw holders designed for 1/2-inch shanks. The center-cutting design permits plunge entry where required by the operation.
Designed as a direct-fit roughing end mill for any toolholding system accepting a 0.5000-inch round shank, including ER collet chucks, straight-shank end mill holders, and set-screw-style holders used on vertical mills and machining centers.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Power down and lock out the spindle drive before mounting or removing any cutting tool. Ensure the shank is clean and fully seated to the recommended insertion depth before torquing the holder — insufficient engagement increases deflection and the risk of pullout under cutting load. Inspect the collet or holder bore for wear or runout before use, as excessive runout will accelerate edge wear on cobalt tooling.
