The HERTEL 06822118 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life under high heat and friction conditions. The cutter measures 1.25 inches in diameter with a 3-inch length of cut and a 5.5-inch overall length. Six right-hand helical flutes produce the characteristic roughing chip-break geometry that reduces cutting forces and allows higher feed rates. This end mill is installed and run by machinists and tool-and-die professionals on manual mills, CNC vertical machining centers, and knee mills.
This roughing end mill is suited for hogging operations in ferrous and high-alloy materials including alloy steels, stainless steels, and tool steels. The M42 cobalt substrate handles elevated cutting temperatures better than standard M2 HSS, making it appropriate for materials that generate significant heat during cutting. The TiN coating adds surface hardness and reduces built-up edge. The 1.25-inch shank diameter matches the cutter diameter for direct collet or end mill holder mounting. Typical applications include roughing pockets, slots, and profiles where a subsequent finishing pass will follow.
Designed as an OEM-style roughing end mill for use in standard end mill holders, collet chucks, and hydraulic holders accepting a 1.25-inch shank diameter on vertical machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and the control in a safe state per shop safety protocols. Secure the shank to the minimum recommended engagement depth specified by the toolholder manufacturer — typically no less than 1.5 times the shank diameter. Because this is a non-center-cutting end mill, do not plunge directly into solid material; use a pre-drilled hole or ramp entry. Inspect the toolholder taper and collet bore for wear or contamination before mounting.
