The HERTEL 02387454 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-throughput drilling in metal, plastic, and other industrial materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point geometry promotes self-centering, reduces walking on entry, and decreases the thrust force required at the spindle. At a compact 1-11/16 inches overall length, this stub-length format is well-suited for drill presses, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes where rigidity and minimal overhang matter. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This bit is sized at wire gauge No. 52, with a decimal equivalent of 0.0635 inches. Screw machine length bits are commonly specified in production drilling, tapping prep work, and short-hole applications where deflection control is critical. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders across bench drill presses and CNC turning or milling equipment. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional clockwise-spindle machines. The flute length is 11/16 inches, keeping the cutting zone short and stiff for accurate hole location in close-tolerance work.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.0635-inch straight-cylindrical shank, compatible with drill presses, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes running right-hand (clockwise) spindle rotation.
Install and remove drill bits only with the spindle fully stopped and the machine powered down or e-stopped. Secure the shank fully within the chuck jaws or collet to the recommended grip depth — insufficient engagement increases runout and risks bit breakage at this small diameter. Cutting fluid or coolant is recommended when drilling ferrous metals, even though this bit does not feature through-coolant capability. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating before each use; chipped or worn edges on small-diameter bits increase the risk of breakage and out-of-tolerance holes.
