The HELICAL SOLUTIONS 86961 is a 3-flute square end mill designed for high-performance milling in aluminum and other non-ferrous materials. Built from solid carbide and finished with a Zplus coating, it delivers sharp, consistent cuts with excellent chip evacuation. The cutter measures 0.125 inches in diameter with a 1-inch length of cut, a 2.5-inch overall length, and a 0.125-inch straight cylindrical shank. A 40-degree right-hand helix angle promotes aggressive material removal while reducing built-up edge on aluminum. The variable index geometry helps suppress chatter, improving surface finish and tool life. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops, aerospace, and general manufacturing facilities use this end mill for slotting, profiling, and pocketing operations.
This end mill is suited for aluminum milling applications in both production and prototype environments. The variable pitch (variable index) design makes it effective in setups prone to vibration or harmonic chatter. It is single-end, right-hand cutting, and centercutting, allowing plunge entry. Typical applications include finishing passes and roughing cuts in aluminum plate, extrusions, and billet stock on CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers.
Designed as an OEM-style cutting tool for CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting a 0.125-inch straight shank; part of the Helical Solutions End Mills for Aluminum 3 Flute Square 40 Degree Helix Variable Pitch series.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool changer or spindle is locked out before inserting or removing the end mill. Seat the shank fully into the toolholder to the recommended engagement depth and tighten to the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before commencing a cut, as excessive runout accelerates tool wear and degrades surface finish.
