The HELICAL SOLUTIONS 46331 is a 3-flute, single-end square end mill engineered specifically for cutting aluminum and non-ferrous materials. Built from solid carbide and finished with a ZrN-family Zplus coating, it delivers the hardness and slick surface needed to resist built-up edge in gummy, soft metals. The cutter runs a 40-degree helix angle for aggressive chip evacuation, while a variable pitch (variable index) flute geometry breaks up harmonics and reduces chatter at higher feed rates. Cutting diameter is 0.5 inches with a matching 0.5-inch straight-cylindrical shank. A reduced-neck, extended-reach design gives 2.25 inches of reach length, keeping the tool clear of deep-pocket walls without sacrificing rigidity.
This end mill is suited for milling aluminum billet, extrusions, plate, and cast non-ferrous workpieces in both CNC machining centers and manual knee mills. It performs well in high-speed finishing passes, full-slot roughing in softer alloys, and profiling operations where chip packing and thermal buildup are primary concerns. The 0.625-inch length of cut accommodates standard shoulder depths, while the 4-inch overall length fits most CAT 40, BT 40, and HSK toolholders without extension. Machinists in production shops, tool rooms, and aerospace job shops are the primary users.
Designed for use on aluminum and non-ferrous workpiece materials (primary workpiece material code N). Intended for the HELICAL SOLUTIONS End Mills for Aluminum series featuring 3-flute, square-profile, 40-degree helix, variable pitch, reduced-neck geometry. Fits any toolholder accepting a 0.5-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
A licensed machinist or trained CNC operator should install and qualify this tool. Secure the shank in a precision collet or end mill holder and verify runout with a dial indicator before cutting — excessive runout accelerates edge chipping in carbide tooling. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are programmed for aluminum-grade end mills before engaging the cut; do not use feeds and speeds intended for steel-rated cutters. Coolant-through is not supported on this tool, so flood coolant directed at the cutting zone or high-pressure air blast is recommended to clear chips.
