The HELI-COIL R1185-1 is a free running helical wire thread insert designed to create strong, wear-resistant threads in materials that are too soft, brittle, or damaged to hold a standard fastener reliably. The insert is sized for a 12-24 UNC thread and measures 0.324 inches overall in length, corresponding to a 1-1/2D length-to-diameter ratio. Constructed from stainless steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers corrosion resistance and clean installation without added plating buildup. This style is tanged, allowing installation with a standard driving tool. Each package contains 12 inserts. Installers include maintenance mechanics, field service technicians, and machinists working on thread repair or new-build applications.
Free running inserts of this type are used where a reliable, standard threaded engagement is required without deliberate locking torque. Typical applications include thread repair on aluminum housings, cast iron components, and composite structures, as well as original equipment manufacturing where host material thread strength is insufficient for the fastener load. The 12-24 UNC size is common in light-duty mechanical assemblies, sheet metal work, and instrumentation panels across industrial, HVAC, and general trade environments. No thread-locking compound is required for free running use, though one may be added by the installer if prevailing torque is desired.
Designed as an OEM-style thread repair and new-installation insert for any host material tapped to accept a 12-24 UNC free running helical insert, including aluminum, magnesium, cast iron, and plastics.
Installation requires a properly tapped hole sized for the insert outside diameter, not the nominal thread size. A dedicated HELI-COIL installation tool is used to drive the insert flush or slightly below the host material surface. After seating, the installation tang is broken off using a tang break-off tool. Always verify hole depth and thread engagement before final assembly to ensure full load transfer.
