The HELI-COIL 5401-2 is a complete thread repair kit designed to restore damaged or stripped internal threads to full-strength, factory-spec condition. The kit targets 8-32 UNC thread applications and includes everything needed to complete the repair in one package: a drill, a tap, 36 wire thread inserts in three length sizes, an installation tool (part number 2288-2), and a tang removal tool sized at 1/8 inch. Inserts measure 0.246 inches in nominal length, with the shortest at 0.164 inches and the longest at 0.328 inches. Licensed tradespeople and experienced technicians across mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and industrial service trades rely on Heli-Coil inserts to salvage tapped holes in aluminum, cast iron, and other base materials.
This kit is suited for field service and shop repair work where 8-32 UNC threaded holes have been stripped, cross-threaded, or otherwise damaged. Each of the three insert lengths is supplied in a quantity of 12, giving the technician flexibility across varying material thicknesses. The included drill and tap are matched to the 8-32 UNC insert specification, eliminating the need to source separate tooling. Typical applications include control panel hardware, equipment enclosures, motor mounts, and any threaded fastener location using 8-32 UNC fasteners.
Designed as an OEM-style thread repair solution for any application using 8-32 UNC threaded holes, including work on equipment enclosures, control assemblies, and mechanical hardware across residential and light commercial service applications.
Installation is performed by a mechanic, HVAC technician, electrician, or similarly skilled tradesperson. Before beginning, de-energize and isolate the equipment being repaired per applicable safety procedures. Use the included drill and tap in sequence before driving the insert with the installation tool - using an incorrect drill or tap size will result in a poor thread fit. Remove the tang after insert installation using the included tang removal tool; never leave the tang in a blind hole where it could cause interference or debris contamination.
