The HARVEY TOOL 38216 is a solid carbide spotting drill designed to create accurate starting divots for follow-on drilling operations in precision machining applications. Built to a 120-degree point angle with a 0.2500-inch (1/4 inch) cutting diameter, this single-ended tool produces clean, consistent spot locations that reduce walk and improve hole-position accuracy. The 2-1/2 inch overall length and straight-cylindrical 1/4 inch shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and collet systems. The bright, uncoated finish is suitable for general-purpose use across a wide range of workpiece materials. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators are the primary users of this tool.
This spotting drill is intended for general-purpose spotting and center-locating operations on CNC machining centers, mills, and drill presses in both job-shop and production environments. The Harvey Type II point geometry with a 120-degree included angle aligns with common twist drill point angles, making it well suited for spotting holes before standard jobber-length or stub drills. The spiral flute design with 2 flutes clears chips efficiently and maintains a clean spot geometry. At 0.75 inches of flute length, it provides sufficient engagement depth for accurate spotting without excessive tool exposure.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill for use in standard 1/4 inch collet chucks, drill chucks, and toolholders on CNC machining centers, knee mills, and bench drill presses where a 1/4 inch straight shank is accepted.
This tool is installed by machining professionals and CNC operators; ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a locked-out state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in the collet or chuck and verify runout before cutting. Carbide tooling is brittle — avoid side-loading or impact; use appropriate feeds and speeds for the workpiece material. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping before each use and replace the tool if edge integrity is compromised.
