The GWS 314553 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations in metal, composites, and hard plastics. Built on the Series 2030 platform, it features a 0.25 inch cutting diameter, a 3/8 inch length of cut, and a 1/4 inch shank diameter with a 2-1/2 inch overall length. The 37-degree helix angle and ZrN (zirconium nitride) coating work together to reduce heat buildup and improve chip evacuation. Three flutes provide a balance between chip clearance and surface finish. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry as well as standard peripheral and slot milling. This end mill is suited for machinists and toolmakers working on CNC machining centers and manual mills.
The GWS 314553 is well suited for light to medium material removal in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, engineering plastics, and composite materials. Its upcut flute configuration pulls chips up and away from the workpiece, making it a practical choice for through-pocket and slot operations where chip packing is a concern. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute geometry follow standard CNC spindle conventions, requiring no special fixturing or toolholder adaptation. The compact 3/8 inch length of cut keeps the tool rigid in tight-clearance applications while the 2-1/2 inch overall length provides adequate reach for most standard setups.
Designed as a standard 1/4 inch shank square end mill compatible with 1/4 inch ER collets, end mill holders, and set-screw style toolholders used on CNC machining centers and manual vertical mills.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in an energy-isolated state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the collet or holder to the minimum engagement depth recommended by the toolholder manufacturer to prevent pullout under load. Verify runout with a dial indicator before commencing the cut, as excessive runout accelerates wear on carbide tooling.
