The GWS 311652 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. This single-end, five-flute tool features a 0.5 inch cutting diameter, a 1.625 inch length of cut, and a 4 inch overall length with a 0.5 inch shank diameter. The AlCrO-MAX coating provides elevated heat and wear resistance, extending tool life in ferrous and exotic alloy cuts. The 38-degree helix and upcut flute geometry promote efficient chip evacuation. Machinists and CNC operators install this tool in vertical machining centers, knee mills, and similar equipment for finishing and semi-finishing passes.
This end mill suits a wide range of workpiece materials, including cast iron (K), stainless steel (M), non-ferrous metals (N), steel (P), heat-resistant superalloys (S), and hardened materials (H). It is centercutting, allowing direct plunge entry into the workpiece. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is standard for conventional CNC milling setups. The Series 2205 designation places it in GWS standard-length tooling, appropriate for general-purpose slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations in job shops and production environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct upgrade for standard 0.5 inch shank square end mill applications across CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting ER, Weldon, or shrink-fit toolholders sized for a 0.5 inch shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in an e-stop or locked-out state. The shank must be inserted to the full recommended engagement depth in the toolholder and secured per the toolholder manufacturer torque guidelines. Inspect the collet or holder for runout before the first cut, as excessive runout accelerates carbide wear and increases the risk of tool breakage. Do not use this tool beyond the rated length-of-cut range without engineering review.
