The GUHRING 9044870040000 is a thread forming tap designed for metric internal threading in blind and through-hole applications. Part of the Guhring Pionex Series 4487, it produces M4x0.7 threads to a 6HX class of fit using a cold-forming process rather than cutting, which displaces material to create stronger thread forms with no chips. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2-3 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Constructed from High-Speed Steel-E-PM (powder metallurgy HSS) and coated with TiCN, this tap is built for demanding production environments where wear resistance and tool life are priorities.
This tap is suited for use in both blind hole and through-hole threading operations across a broad range of workpiece materials. Rated for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and superalloys (material application codes P, M, K, N, S), it covers the majority of materials encountered in machining, fabrication, and maintenance work. The right-hand thread direction and 3xD flute-by-diameter ratio make it a standard choice for CNC tapping centers and manual tapping operations requiring close-tolerance metric threads.
Designed for M4x0.7 metric internal threading in blind and through-hole configurations across workpiece materials coded P, M, K, N, and S, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and superalloy. Verify pilot hole diameter against standard M4 thread forming pre-drill charts before use.
Thread forming taps require a correctly sized pre-drilled pilot hole that is larger than the tap drill size used for cutting taps — consult a standard metric thread forming pre-drill table for M4x0.7 before machining. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap and workpiece before starting; the 4 oil grooves assist lubricant distribution but do not substitute for proper lubrication practice. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping, and ensure spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the workpiece material when used in CNC or power tapping equipment. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, particularly when working with stainless steel or superalloys.
