The GUHRING 9044073063500 is a spiral flute tap designed for blind hole threading in a wide range of metalworking applications. Part of the Series 4407, it is ground from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with an oxide coating for improved wear resistance and lubricity. The tap cuts a 1/4-20 UNC right-hand thread with a modified bottoming chamfer, making it suitable for threading holes where depth clearance is limited. Three fast-helix flutes at a 40-degree helix angle efficiently evacuate chips upward out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping operations.
This tap is rated for 2B and 3B class-of-fit tolerances at an H3 thread limit, covering the majority of standard fastener and precision threading requirements. It is suited for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron workpieces. The 40-degree helix angle makes it particularly effective in tougher materials such as stainless steel and alloy steel where chip control is critical. With an overall length of 2.5 inches and a thread length of 0.511 inches, it fits standard tap holders and tapping chucks used in production and job-shop environments.
Rated for primary workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron (material codes P, M, K, N). Designed for blind hole threading applications and fits standard tap holders accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage, particularly in harder materials. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound matched to the workpiece material. Inspect the tap for wear regularly; cobalt taps are durable but should be replaced when thread quality degrades to prevent workpiece damage.
